Government 'must reconsider how to boost broadband take-up'

Wednesday, March 10th 2010 by Cable.co.uk

Cost is not the only obstacle to get more people to take up broadband connections, a new report has revealed.

Increasing the number of households in the UK with broadband connections will take more than lowering prices, a new report has revealed.

Consumer Focus has suggested in its new Broadband Minded report that the government may need to rethink how to encourage more people to get online, as those without connections have a range of concerns about the web.

It revealed that some of the reasons Brits are not yet online include fears over viruses, identity theft and new technology.

Mike O'Connor, chief executive of Consumer Focus, said: "Millions of people are still not online, many of them on low incomes.

"Only by dealing with consumers' fears and promoting the online benefits that appeal to those on low incomes will more people be encouraged to get connected."

Consumer Focus recently also urged the government to ensure its new Broadband Delivery UK body closes the digital divide between urban and rural areas.
