Group FaceTime and Memoji are coming to iPhones with the latest iOS 12 update
If you’re a die-hard Apple fan, we have have some news that may be music to your ears.
Apple has confirmed the rollout of the iOS 12 software update, which will bring new features like Group FaceTime, Memojis and Siri controls.
An exact release date for the iOS 12 update has not yet been confirmed but Apple says it will be sometime in Autumn. The update will adapt to iPhones, iPads and sixth generation iPods.
We don’t know which feature we’re more excited about but it’s a toss up between the group Facetime and the Memoji.
Memoji vs AR Emoji
Following the release of the iPhone X and the 3D Animoji, Samsung tried to one-up it by introducing augmented reality emojis based on your selfie. The anticipation for Samsung’s AR Emoji function was high as the manufacturer teamed up with Oscar-winning 3D Avatar creators, Loom.ai.
But, as we found out when reviewing the Samsung Galaxy S9, the AR Emoji feature turned out to be a let down due to its lack of diverse options. The Apple version - Memoji - is not yet available as the rollout is set to start in Autumn but from the released pictures, it has already won as the better feature.
As well as introducing Memojis, Apple has added the koala, tiger, ghost and T. rex to its preexisting Animoji software. The AR capabilities have had a facelift too with the update to ARkit 2.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, said: “We’re very excited about the new communications features we’re bringing to iPhone and iPad with Memoji, a more personal form of Animoji, fun camera effects and Group FaceTime.
“With iOS 12, we’re enabling new experiences that weren’t possible before. We’re using advanced algorithms to make AR even more engaging and on-device intelligence to deliver faster ways to get things done using Siri.”
Making conference calls or catching up with a group of friends will get easier for Apple users, as the update will allow you to FaceTime up to 32 people at the same time. As well as on the iPhone and iPad, Group FaceTime will be made available on Macs and and you can take part using the audio from Apple Watch.
With the talk of the mobile town being AI powered phone technology, Apple has created its own version, Siri Shortcuts. When the iOS 12 update arrives on your device, you’ll find Siri is now able to learn your habits and adjust the phone's functionality so you get things done more quickly.
It can suggest actions like ordering a morning coffee or starting a morning workout. You can also run shortcuts with your voice or create your own with the new Shortcuts app.
Apple News, Carplay and Siri translations have also been revamped and the Apple Wallet now supports Student ID cards.
