iD Mobile announces its 'best SIM-only deal' - but how good is it?

Monday, November 13th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

iD Mobile is offering 2.5GB of data, 500 minutes and 5,000 texts for £7 a month in what it describes as its best SIM-only deal.

The deal is available on a 30-rollling contract and gives you access to 4G speeds using Three’s mobile network.

iD also has one of the cheapest 30-day SIM-only plan currently on the market, offering 500MB of data, 250 minutes and 5,000 texts for £4 a month.

But how does its best deal (iD Mobile’s words, not ours) compare with similarly priced plans from other providers? There are quite a few options out there and we've rounded up quite a few of them here, but to narrow down the list you will have to work out how much you use your phone for texting, calling and going online.

Most providers have a coverage checker on their website so it may be worth popping your details into a couple of these to get a better idea what kind of signal you're going to get.

We should point out at this point that some of these deals come with 12-month contracts, while others are on more flexible 30-day rolling contracts.

What's on offer out there?

Plusnet is offering triple the data and double the minutes on its cheapest SIM-only deal (for the next three days), giving you 1.5GB of data with 500 minutes and 1,000 texts. This, weirdly, means that Plusnet’s £7.50 plan actually gives you less data at the moment (1GB), although you do get 1,000 minutes and unlimited texts so it depends what you need.

For £6 a month, Virgin Media will give you 300MB of data, 300 minutes and unlimited texts, while for £9 a month you get a significant boost to 3GB of data and 1,500, again with unlimited texts.

Three’s lowest priced SIM-only deal is £5 a month, and for that you get 500MB of data, 200 minutes and unlimited texts. For £9 a month it offers 1GB of data and 600 minutes, and for £10 you can get 4GB and unlimited calls.

O2 isn’t as generous if you go for its cheapest SIM deal, offering just 200MB of data, 150 minutes and 150 texts for £9 a month. Tesco Mobile offers quite a bit more than that – 1GB of data, 500 minutes and 5,000 texts for £7.50 a month or 500MB, 250 minutes and 5,000 texts for £6 a month.

giffgaff has two deals that fit into the price bracket we’re talking about. For £5 a month it will give you 100MB of data, 150 minutes and 500 texts, but for £7.50 it will give you quite a bit more – a whole 1GB of data, 250 minutes and unlimited texts.

We’re going to give a mention to one of the newest players in the mobile market now, SMARTY. The SIM-only network from the people behind Three is offering 2GB of data plus unlimited calls and texts on a one-month plan for £7.50, and will give you a refund on any data you don’t use.

All of Asda Mobile's SIM-only plans are 30-day rolling deals. Asda cheapest deal offers 200MB of data, 125 minutes and 2,000 texts for £5 a month, or for £7 a month you could get 1GB of data, 300 minutes and unlimited texts.

The absolute cheapest SIM-only deals we can find come from IQ Mobile. Its lowest priced deal that includes mobile data is £4.99 a month on a 12-month contract and gives you 200 minutes, 200 texts and 250MB of data.

IQ’s closest match to the iD Mobile plan, price-wise, is a £6.99 a month 12-month plan that gives you 500 minutes, 2,000 and 500MB of data.

It would remiss of us not to mention IQ’s two ultra-low price deals here, both perfect if you don’t use your phone to get online but just want to be able to send a few texts and make a few calls.

If this sounds like you, IQ will give you 100 minutes and 100 texts either for £2.99 a month on a 12-month contract or £3.99 a month on a rolling 30-day contract.
