iD Mobile says sorry after wrongly charging customers for EU calls

Friday, August 18th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

iD Mobile has had to apologise after wrongly charging customers for using their phones abroad.

Since 15 June, UK customers roaming in the EU should only pay the same as they would to use their phone at home.

But iD Mobile has been charging its customers extra to call numbers in EU countries while they’re abroad, MoneySavingExpert reported.

The mobile network appears to have misunderstood the EU ruling that led to the introduction of free roaming, posting on a forum: “If you travel to a country in the EU, you can text or call someone in the same country free of charge. If you call someone in another country, this is chargeable.”

iD Mobile told MoneySaving Expert it was changing its policy after consulting Ofcom on the new regulation.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and are automatically crediting any customers who have made intra-EU calls since 15 June,” the Carphone Warehouse-owned company said.

iD Mobile has also this week announced a range of ‘back to school’ offers aimed at students and parents.

All of its deals come with automatic bill capping, data rollover and, ironically enough, free roaming in 50 destinations as standard.

The provider says it is the only UK network to offer all three on the same 4G plan.

Its offers range from its cheapest SIM-only deal – £3.99 a month for 5MB of data, 5,000 texts and 500 minutes – to £26.99 a month for an iPhone 6s with 4GB of data, 5,000 texts and 600 minutes.

Tesco Mobile has announced its own selection of ‘back to school’ offers including a budget Android smartphone (the IMO Q2) on pay as you go for £29.99 when bought with a £10 top-up.

It is also offering the Nokia 3 on pay as you go for £115 plus a £10 top-up, or on a pay monthly contract from £12 a month.

Until Monday 4 September, Tesco Mobile customers can get three months of ‘Rocket Pack’ boosts for £5 a month instead of £10 a month.

Rocket Packs give customers 1GB of data, 500 minutes and 5,000 texts.
