KCOM launches 'flexible' broadband deals with 30% off for six months

Tuesday, August 22nd 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

KCOM has launched a range of new “flexible” broadband-only plans that are discounted by up to 30% until the New Year.

Customers in Hull and east Yorkshire can choose from five different data allowances – and add a landline if they need one.

But KCOM doesn’t say whether the deals are for standard ADSL broadband or for its Lightstream fibre product.

The cheapest package in KCOM’s summer sale comes with a 20GB allowance and costs £19.99 a month for the first six months, after which it will cost £24.99.

There are also options for 200GB, 400GB and 750GB allowances, and an unlimited option priced at £34.99 for six months then £49.99.

Customers can add a local calling plan for an extra £1 a month or a national plan for £5 a month.

Cable.co.uk has asked KCOM to clarify what speeds customers signing up to its new broadband-only tariffs can expect.

Earlier this month, KCOM was fined £900,000 by Ofcom for a network failure that left some customers unable to contact emergency services.

The provider’s emergency call service failed for around four hours overnight between 27 ad 28 December 2015 after a telephone exchange in York became flooded.

As a result 74 attempted calls to 999 or 112 from 34 different numbers failed to connect.

Following an investigation, Ofcom found that all emergency calls from customers in the Hull area relied on the flooded telephone exchange in York – a single point of failure in KCOM’s emergency call routing.

According to Ofcom rules, KCOM should have been able to automatically divert emergency calls via alternative routes.

UPDATE: A KCOM spokesperson said the new deals are standard ADSL broadband and have been introduced on a trial basis initially, adding that downloads speeds will vary depending on the customer's location.

She said KCOM has also launched new Lightsteam (fibre) packages offering a choice of 30Mbps, 150Mbps or 350Mbps download speeds.
