KCOM to speed up the rollout of fibre broadband in Hull
A Hull-based broadband provider has changed its name – and set out plans to speed up the rollout of fibre in the area.
KC Broadband, which from today will be known as KCOM, said it will connect around 90,000 homes and businesses to its fibre to the premises (FTTP) network over the next 20 months.
That will take the total number of properties in Hull and East Yorkshire able to access the Lightstream service to 150,000 – around three-quarters of KCOM’s entire network.
It also means the total capital investment in KCOM’s fibre deployment will have reached £60m by December 2017.
The acceleration of the rollout has been funded by the £90m sale of KCOM’s national infrastructure outside of Hull and East Yorkshire.
Parent company KCOM Group said the adoption of a “single brand and visual identity” was another important step in a transformation programme involving five brands that serve more than 170,000 UK customers.
KCOM managing director Gary Young said: “We’re focused on improving services for our customers, which is why we’re investing many millions of pounds to make Hull the UK’s ultrafast broadband capital.
“During the next phase of our deployment we’ll be focusing on taking our Lightstream service to areas of our network where speeds are slower than average because of the length of copper cable from customers’ homes and businesses to the telephone exchange.”
'Raise the profile'
Mr Young said the company’s ambition to make the Hull and East Yorkshire region the best-connected in the UK will help local people make the most of being online.
“We’re a successful national business but our roots remain firmly in this area and our commitment to Hull and East Yorkshire remains as strong as ever,” he said.
“Moving to a national brand means we can raise the profile of the region at the same time as promoting our business.”
Lord Haskins, chair of the Humberside Local Enterprise Partnership, said the accelerated fibre rollout plans are “good news for the region”.
“The Humber has a significant digital economy with businesses of all types and sizes relying on digital technology to operate and, in many cases, innovate, so a robust infrastructure is vital to our economic success,” he said.
“The UK government has recognised the growing need for the type of ultrafast connectivity KC’s investment is delivering and we are delighted that local businesses are already benefiting from it and that more will do so more quickly.”
