Liverpool the best UK city for mobile network performance - RootMetrics
Liverpool is the best UK city for mobile performance, according to a new report.
The Metro Ranking Report, from mobile analytics company RootMetrics, analysed 16 UK ‘metro’ areas, or ‘larger urban zones’, ranking them based on how they compare for mobile network performance.
It looked at Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester, Belfast, Edinburgh, Coventry, Nottingham, Leicester, London, Newcastle, Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford, Glasgow, Bristol, Cardiff, and Hull.
They were then ranked based on how the four major network operators performance in six categories – overall performance, reliability, speed, mobile internet, call, and text.
Liverpool came top for overall mobile performance, but also in the categories of reliability, network speed, and mobile internet.
London only ranked 9th, and never finished higher than number six across all categories. When it came to call performance, the capital ranked 14th out of the 16 places tested.
Bottom of the list was Hull, coming last across all six categories tested by RootMetrics.
Manchester finished in a top three position in all categories except call performance, where it came sixth, the report said.
Birmingham ranked top for calls and texts, and also came in the top three cities for reliability, speed and overall performance.
Chris Smith, general manager of Europe at RootMetrics, said: “Good mobile service is a crucial part of a city’s basic infrastructure.
“These rankings give a scientific indication of where in the country you are more likely to enjoy reliable mobile performance.”
RootMetrics distils results from its scientific, independent and consumer-focused tests into ‘RootScores’, with higher scores showing better mobile internet reliability and speed.
Last month, EE beat its rivals to be named the top-performing operator by Rootmetrics.
The UK’s largest operator earned the highest overall score in the RootMetrics 1st Half 2015 UK Mobile Network Performance Review, topping the table for categories including overall performance, network reliability, network speed, mobile internet, call and text.
The report looks at major mobile operators’ network performance for the UK as a whole, in each of the four UK nations, and in the 16 largest UK metro areas.
EE earned the highest overall RootScore Award, with 89.4 out of 100, followed by Three (84.7), Vodafone (74.5), and O2 (72.7).
All operators showed areas of improvement in the biannual report, RootMetrics said.
Along with EE’s success, Three earned second-place finishes in five of six categories, coming in just behind EE in reliability, while Vodafone improved its ranking in overall performance, and moved ahead of Three to rank second in network speed.
O2 finished last outright or tied for last place in five of six categories on the UK level, although scoring was often close, RootMetrics said.
