Mermaid fantasy series Siren to premiere on SyFy channel in May
There's fishy goings-on in a series set to hit Syfy at the beginning of next month: Siren, set in a mermaid-obsessed American fishing town.
Bristol Cove is known as the 'Home of the Mermaid Days Festival' - and was once, according to legend, home to mermaids themselves.
One day, a mysterious naked girl called Ryn (Eline Powell) is found staggering down the road. She turns out to be a mermaid, which apparently gain legs instead of a tail when they venture on land (who knew?).
Marine biologists Ben (Alex Roe, The Fifth Wave) and Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola) work together to find out who and what drove Ryn out of the deep sea to land and whether there are any more like her out there. But while Ben finds himself drawn to Ryn, Maddie is deeply suspicious.
Other characters include Xander, a deep-sea fisherman on a quest to uncover the truth, and Rena Owen (Star Wars: Episodes II and III) as Helen, the town eccentric who seems to know more about the mermaids than she lets on.
Ryn turns out to be looking for her sister, Donna (Sibongile Mlambo), who has been captured by the government after being caught in a fisherman's net - but is doing her best to escape.
If all this sounds a bit Disney and sentimental, it's really not. In this story, mermaids are ruthless predators, much like the sirens of Greek myth who used their charms to attract sailors and lure them to their deaths. The mermaids sing like birds to draw in their prey.
"[Ryn] is definitely a predator. She's definitely full of fierceness and can absolutely handle herself and above and beyond. But there's more to her than that," says Powell.
"She's curious, she's searching for an intimacy with those around her. She can be vulnerable and nervous and all those things. But I'd say she's just very pure and she has a very strong survival instinct from living in the ocean. She's a hunter."
The ten-part series is based on a story by Eric Wald and Dean White, who both serve as executive producers, and hits Syfy on 3 May.
