Millions sign up to BT nuisance call blocking service

More than two million BT customers are using the company’s free nuisance calls blocker less than three months after its introduction.

BT Call Protect diverts unwanted calls into a junk voicemail box and is estimated to have reduced the number of scammers and other nuisance callers reaching customers by 65% since its launch in January.

The service is developing all the time with customers making 80,000 calls a week to BT Call Protect’s 1572 number to add numbers to their personal blacklist or change their settings.

When large numbers of customers report the same numbers, they are also added to BT’s central blacklist.

If all of BT’s customers sign up, the telecoms giant says it could divert a total of 1.6bn nuisance calls a year.

PPI and accident claims firms alone are responsible for 800m of these calls.

John Petter, chief executive of BT Consumer, said: “This is great news for our customers, but bad news for the nuisance calls industry, like personal accident claims and PPI.

“The response to BT Call Protect has been massive. Having more than two million customers already using the service is a fantastic achievement in our fight against the companies that pester our customers with millions of nuisance calls.”

BT customer Luigi Gallo, from Leicester, said he’s seen a “massive difference” in the amount of unwanted calls he’s received since signing up to the service.

“I used to get at least six or seven calls a week where I was told I have a computer virus – even though I don’t own a computer,” he said.

“The service has made a real difference. I still get the odd one or two, but the fact I can quickly add them to my personal blacklist and I won’t hear from them again is comforting.

“Although I do miss winding them up by playing along with them about switching on my computer only to tell them I don’t own one,” he added.
