Netflix says LG and Sony TVs are the best for streaming Netflix
There is a multitude of ways to stream Netflix on your telly, there’s the Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV Stick, and Roku Streaming Stick+ to name a few or if you’ve got a pay-TV package, your Virgin V6 and TalkTalk TV box will let you do it too.
But are you getting the best experience? Well, if you don't have an LG or Sony TV then Netflix says you might not be.
The entertainment streaming giant has released a list of Smart TVs that it recommends avid Netflix watchers should bear in mind when buying a new telly this year.
Armed with a stopwatch and a bunch of smart TVs, researchers at Netflix HQ tested tellies that allow you to stream its service, to see how they all match up against its criteria.
To win the ‘Netflix Recommended TV’ accolade the smart device must meet at least five out of its list of seven criteria points.
This means when you switch on the telly it should: start up instantly and get to Netflix within a few seconds, allow you to move quickly and easily between apps, come with the latest version of Netflix and support newer, more immersive Netflix browsing experiences.
'Faster and easier to use than ever'
Drum roll please, and the winners are... LG 4K UHD TVs with webOS 4.0 and the Sony W800F / WF800 series Android TVs.
If you recently brought one of these then you get a pat on the back from Netflix who says they are “faster and easier to use than ever.”
The chosen models have a designated Netflix button on the remote control so you can start watching instantly with the press of a single button.
The tests were overseen by Brady Gunderson, Netflix's director of product management, and David Holland, its director of business development.
While the tech you’re using to stream Netflix plays a role in how good your experience is, there are a range of other factors that have an impact as well. In particular, your broadband connection will play a big part.
While you can comfortably stream using standard up to 17Mbps broadband, you may still get plagued by the loading wheel of doom. To combat this, we’d recommend a fibre broadband connection.
At the time of writing, Vodafone is offering a pretty cheap way of getting you hands on some fibre. Over an 18-month contract, it’s £20 a month for download speeds up to 38Mbps.
Alternatively, if you have a need for speed and download some hefty files Virgin Media might be your best bet. For download speeds up to 100Mbps over a 12-month contract it’s £32 a month.
