Netflix starts production on original film 'The King', starring Timothée Chalamet and Joel Edgerton

Thursday, June 7th 2018 by Oprah Flash

Netflix has started work on a new Original film, The King, with an all star cast including Timothée Chalamet, Joel Edgerton and Robert Pattinson.

It is currently being filmed here in the UK and is set to be released in 2019. Netflix says the plot for the film was inspired by Shakespeare’s Henry IV and Henry V plays.

Set in 14th century England, the film centres of the story of Hal, a young prince who has the reign of power thrust into his hands when his brother is murdered just before his coronation.

As next in line, a young Henry V becomes King and has the mammoth task of protecting his country as it goes to war with France.

As well as directing The King, David Michôd (Animal Kingdom, War Machine) wrote the script alongside Joel Edgerton who stars as Henry V’s companion, Falstaff.

Behind the scenes producing the periodic thriller is Academy Award winner Plan B together with Liz Watts from Porchlight Films, Edgerton and Michôd.

We can look forward to seeing a stellar cast bringing this story to life and the lineup includes Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation), Ben Mendelsohn (The Land of Steady Habits), Robert Pattinson (The Twilight franchise) and Lily-Rose Depp (The Summoning).

Dubbed the 2017 breakout star, Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet takes his shot at being a royal as he has been cast to play King Henry V. Earlier this year Edgerton graced our screens opposite Will Smith in the Netflix Original sci-fi thriller, Bright.

The idea behind the film has been in the pipeline for a while. The GeekTyrant reported that Michod and Edgerton teamed up and co-wrote the script in 2013.

Two years ago, in the podcast Happy Sad Confused, Edgerton compared the film to Game of Thrones, and said it will be a period film with contemporary dialogue.

The King will premiere on Netflix in 2019. Subscriptions for the streaming service start at £5.99.
