New Highlands town's first residents get ultrafast fibre broadband

Tuesday, May 16th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

The first houses built in the Highlands’ newest town are being connected to an ultrafast fibre broadband network.

GTC is installing fibre to the home (FTTH) infrastructure for the initial phase of 880 homes being built in Tornagrain, a planned community near Inverness.

Homeowners moving in will have a choice of five broadband providers and access to speeds up to 300Mbps.

Tornagrain, the first new town to be built in Scotland for 50 years, is an exemplar under the Scottish Government’s Sustainable Communities initiative and its design is based on traditional Highlands architecture.

More than a decade since it was first proposed, homebuilders Zero C and A&J Stephen have started work on a town that will eventually be home to around 12,000 people.

GTC is delivering fibre broadband as part of a multi-utility installation including connections for gas, electricity and water.

Lesley Campbell, GTC’s commercial director for Scotland, said: “We are delighted that the first homes on our FTTH network at Tornagrain in Scotland have gone live.

“The team in our Scottish office has been working closely with Zero C and A&J Stephen, as we do with all our housebuilder customers, and it is very satisfying to see the new community beginning to emerge.”

Alastair Struthers, sales manager at Zero C, said: “Working with GTC has been a great experience.

“Their team have been exceptionally helpful in the delivery of the FTTH packages into our homes.

“The high speeds are unparalleled in the area and so have proved enticing to many of our customers, adding real value to their homes.

“The new residents have been thrilled with the consistent high speeds they are receiving and ease of getting up and running as soon as they move into their home.”
