New Duncan Jones sci-fi film Mute to premiere on Netflix on 23 February

Thursday, February 1st 2018 by Mike Whitehead

Mute, a British-German science fiction mystery film directed by Duncan Jones, revolves around a mute bartender searching for the love of his life who has mysteriously disappeared.

Berlin, 40 years from now has become a frightening and unforgiving city. Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) – unable to speak from a childhood accident – searches desperately for Naadirah, the love of his life. Searching the seedy back streets, he finds more than he bargained for, becoming embroiled with two American surgeons, Cactus Bill (Paul Rudd) and Duck (Justin Theroux), who have an agenda all of their own.

This stirring dystopian story from filmmaker Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code, Warcraft) is a passionate tale told within an unrelenting world. Written by Jones and Michael Robert Johnson, it is produced by Stuart Fenegan.

Described as a spiritual sequel to Moon and heavily influenced by Ridley Scott’s 1982 cult classic Blade Runner, the film remained in development hell for many years until Jones agreed to direct. Filmed on location in Berlin, Mute, originally slated for release in 2017, will now be released on 23 February 2018 on Netflix. It will also have a limited release in selected theatres.

So, if you’ve never been tempted to join the Netflix party but fancy taking the plunge, here’s what you need to know.

Netflix is a streaming video service, which basically means that as long as you have an internet connection, you can watch TV shows and movies without having to wait for it to download.

After paying a monthly subscription, you can watch whole series or movies at your own pace, on everything from your TV to your mobile phone. Almost all Netflix series are made available in one go, so you don’t have to wait a week for a new episode.

There are currently three subscription plans and every one requires members to pay a fixed price per month. The cheapest, which allows viewers to watch on one device at a time in standard definition, costs £5.99 per month. For £7.99 per month, viewers can watch in HD and on two devices at a time. For £9.99 a month, you get to watch in Ultra HD where available, and on four screens at a time.

To set up your account go to www.netflix.com and follow the instructions. You need a valid email address and a credit or debit card. After a one-month free trial, you’re automatically switched to the £7.99 per month package. You can view or change your payment plan in the account settings. Go to 'Change Plan' to find out more.

What else is coming to Netflix in February 2018?

If sci-fi stuff is your bag, in addition to the launch of Mute, you can binge watch Season 1 of Altered Carbon, based on the classic cyberpunk novel. It is set over 300 years in the future, when human minds are digitized and downloaded from body to body.

David Letterman returns on 9 February in ‘My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman’. A monthly series of in-depth interviews with globally relevant personalities, plus field segments expressing his curiosity. This month’s guest is George Clooney.
