Nottingham becomes Hyperoptic's latest 'gigabit' city
Fibre provider Hyperoptic has added Nottingham to its list of ‘gigabit’ cities.
Several developments are set to benefit from the company’s infrastructure, which can deliver speeds of 1Gbps, and it plans to expand across the city by the end of the year.
Hyperoptic provides fibre to the premises (FTTP) connections which run all the way into a development, rather than to a cabinet in the street, which it says eliminates peak-time slowdowns, buffering and timeouts.
The company focuses on bringing its services into developments with 50 or more units and installations are prioritised in buildings where there is greatest demand from the freeholder and residents.
Hyperoptic national team manager Tim Huxtable said: “Hyperoptic is investing heavily in infrastructure across Nottingham, to give residents and businesses access to the fastest broadband speeds in the UK.
“We have been hugely encouraged by the appetite for our hyperfast broadband - we choose our cities based on registrations of interest, so it’s fantastic to be fulfilling this demand in Nottingham.”
The provider’s services are already live in Marco Island, one of the biggest developments in Nottingham city centre, with a number of other developments undergoing installation.
Marco Island resident Henry Machin said: “I only moved into the development a few months ago and the main reason I chose it was because I heard that Hyperoptic was installing its full fibre broadband services.
“Broadband has always been a big bugbear of mine; I get really frustrated by the time it takes to upload content and the lack of reliability when I am gaming or streaming HD movies.
“What I love about Hyperoptic is that I no longer have to think about my broadband, it just works.”
Nicety to necessity
Gavin Mearns, residential block Manager from Eddisons Residential, said: “The feedback about Hyperoptic’s services has been phenomenal.
“We are always looking for innovative ways to further enhance the residents’ experience.
“Fast, reliable broadband has moved from a nicety to a necessity, so we are thrilled to be able to offer the option of gigabit connectivity in addition to our suite of residents’ services.”
Hyperoptic offers a range of residential packages, including broadband and landline packages, and recently launched a ‘no contract’ option for new customers.
Welcoming the company to the city, councillor Nick McDonald, portfolio holder for jobs, skills and transport at Nottingham City Council, said: “We are delighted to see new internet service providers entering the Nottingham market, as this enables more high speed services to the small business community.
“We’re encouraging the growth of the supplier market, as we know access to fast, reliable broadband is essential and is one of the foundations needed to encourage more growth in the city.
“It’s a great time to welcome Hyperoptic as businesses can currently access funded grants through us to cover the cost of upgrading their connection.”
Last month, Hyperoptic was named ‘best superfast broadband' at the annual Internet Service Providers’ Association (ISPA) awards.
It also won ‘best consumer fixed broadband’ and ‘best use of digital’ at the awards, which celebrate innovation and best practice in the UK internet industry.
