Number of broadband users across the EU rises

Wednesday, December 9th 2009 by Cable.co.uk

The number of European households with broadband access grew over the first quarter of 2009.

New research has revealed that the number of households across Europe with broadband access rose over the first quarter of this year.

The study by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, found that 65 per cent of homes across the continent now have internet access, which is a rise of five per cent on figures from 12 months earlier.

It was also revealed that 77 per cent of households in the UK now have access to broadband services, which was found to be lower than countries including the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden, Denmark and Germany.

However, the UK was found to be one of the member states that has most embraced online retail, as 66 per cent of people between 16 and 74 have used web-based shopping services in the past year.

The release of Eurostat's figures has come after research by TalkTalk suggested that fast broadband services are making people more impatient in all parts of their lives.
