Public Wi-Fi popularity highlighted by O2

Many Brits welcome the ability to access public Wi-Fi while out and about, according to O2.

New figures published by O2 highlight the popularity of public Wi-Fi access, with two in five Brits saying they favour pubs, coffee shops and restaurants that offer wireless connectivity.

The network operator, which offers a free Wi-Fi service in thousands of stores run by the likes of McDonald's, Debenhams and Costa Coffee, discovered that more than one-quarter of consumers use the service to check prices online and make sure they are getting the best deal.

Wireless internet access also stops many people feeling alone, the survey revealed, with 53 per cent of respondents saying they are happy to eat and drink on their own provided they have their phone - and subsequently a means of browsing the web - with them.

O2 also claimed that Wi-Fi is helping to bring couples together, as 16 per cent said their partner is more enthusiastic about accompanying them on shopping trips now that they have the ability to log on while they are out of the house.

The publication comes just days after O2 reached a major milestone for its Wi-Fi proposition, with the six millionth customer signing up - just two years after the service launched.
