O2 cuts the price of data, minutes and texts on its classic pay as you go tariff
O2 has cut the prices on its classic pay-as-you-go tariff. Call charges have been reduced from 5p a minute to 3p while texts will now cost 2p instead of 5p. Data is also cheaper, at 1p per MB instead of 5p.
You must top up a minimum of £10 and will get a SIM card that fits in any handset.
This is a good deal if you are an infrequent user and you can keep your credit for whenever you want so there are no monthly contracts to worry about.
If you find yourself needing more calls or data, O2 also offers bolt-ons. You can get an extra 50 minutes for £1 a day or 100 over 31 days for a one off £3 cost.
You can also get 100 texts for 31 days for £3.
Data deals start at £4 a day for 31 days for 250MB up to £30.50 a month for 12GB. You could also combine 50 minutes and 1GB of data for £12 a month.
O2 customers also get access to a rewards scheme.
Under O2 Rewards, every three months the provider will add up all your top-ups and give you 5% or 10% back. You can spend it on extra credit, phones and accessories, shopping vouchers or Ticketmaster tickets. The rewards must be claimed within three months.
More data and minutes
If you know you will need more data and minutes you may be better off buying bundles rather than getting individual add-ons.
O2 provides 2GB, 250 minutes and 1,000 texts for £10 a month on a rolling contract.
In comparison, you can get a £10 pay-as-you-go pack from Three offering 1GB of data and 3,000 minutes and texts for £10. This lasts for 30 days.
For the same £10 minimum you could get 2GB of data, 100 minutes and unlimited texts for 30 days or if you need more call time there is a Talk Pack with 50MB of data and 5,000 minutes for 30 days.
Three will charge 3p a minute and 2p a text on pay-as you go outside of an allowance but you get a free 10MB with each top up and it then it charges 1p per MB.
You can also get more guaranteed minutes than O2 for a cheaper rolling monthly price. Carphone Warehouse subsidiary iD Mobile charges £3.99 on a pay-as-you-go deal for 500 minutes, 5,000 texts and 500MB of data on a one month contract.
Smarty will give you 2GB of data and unlimited texts and minutes for £7.50 on a monthly contract and any unused data is discounted onto the next month.
If you don’t want to be tied into any contract, you could pay £5 to giffgaff for 150 minutes, 500 texts and 100MB of data.
