O2 offers free screen replacement service – but only for certain handsets

Monday, September 11th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

O2 has launched a free screen replacement service for customers buying certain handsets.

The new service means eligible customers will be able to get the screen replaced once during their 24-month contract free of charge.

Free screen replacements are available for the Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus and Note 8, and the Oneplus 5.

Customers who accidentally crack their screen will be able to call O2 and a next day courier service will come to collect the damaged device and provide a temporary replacement.

The service is likely to be a popular one – research by O2 shows that 51% of smartphone owners have cracked the screen of their handset at least once.

Up to 7.5m people in the UK have a phone screen in need of some TLC at any given time, according to O2.

Nina Bibby, O2’s chief marketing officer, said: “A customer’s phone is much more than just a phone – it’s how they share every experience, connecting them to the people and things that they love.

“So we also know how frustrating a cracked screen can be.

“We know that cost can put customers off getting their handsets fixed – and that they don’t always trust some of the outlets offering cut-price repairs.

“So, we’re launching free screen replacements to fix both of those problems as quickly and easily as possible for our customers.”

O2 has also followed in the footsteps of Three and offered to refund customers for any calls made checking on the welfare of loved ones in the Caribbean following the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma.

The operator said it will remove all usage charges from the UK to landlines and roaming mobiles in the region, as well as charges for O2 customers roaming in the Caribbean.

Three announced it would reimburse customers affected by the hurricane last week, telling Cable.co.uk: “Our thoughts go out to those affected by Hurricane Irma.

“We will be reimbursing all associated costs for any Three customers who are contacting loved ones.”
