O2 offers savings of up to £168 with iPhone 8 deal
O2 is currently advertising an eye-catching deal on the iPhone 8: a saving of up to £168 on the total package.
Of course, if you're told that something has a discount of more than a hundred and fifty quid, you can be pretty sure that the original price is, well, on the high side.
And it turns out, of course, that the projected savings are for the company's more expensive plans.
The 20GB tariff, for example, gives unlimited minutes and texts, and includes free O2 wi-fi, 4G Calling and the Priority service offering exclusive tickets, offers and experiences. And there's now a £29.99 upfront cost, with the two-year plan then costing £60 a month.
For the same upfront cost and an extra £1 a month, you can up your data to 30GB; and at the top of the range, a 50GB plan will set you back £67 a month, again with just £29.99 payable upfront.
If you'd rather pay more upfront for the phone - £119.99 - these monthly payments fall to £56, £57 and £63 respectively.
And, as you'd expect, the savings are rather less at the lower end of O2's tariff range. A 10GB plan with unlimited texts and calls costs £39.99 up front and £55 a month; 5GB will set you back £69.99 plus £52 a month, 3GB is £99.99 plus £48 a month and 1GB costs £119.99 plus £45 a month.
Again, a higher up-front price will get you a lower monthly tariff.
Upgrade for free after 12 months
The offers are available until the 7th February and include the ability to upgrade after 12 months for free - something that may come in handy, with rumours that Apple is planning to launch as many as four new phones later this year, with another model due to follow early in 2019.
And the O2 offer includes a freebie for existing customers too, who can benefit by upgrading to a plan offering 10MB or more and get 10GB extra data for free.
Still new enough to impress, the iPhone 8 features a 4.7-inch Retina HD display with True Tone, which automatically adjusts white balance to match the surrounding light. There's an impressive 12MP camera with new sensor, wireless charging and a new all-glass design that the company says is its most durable ever.
The iPhone 8 usually sells for around £850 if you're simply buying the handset outright. With the O2 offer, a 10GB plan will cost £1,360 over the course of the contract; for 1GB it's £1,200.
Good as these deals are, though, it's worth shopping around, as we think you can probably do substantially better. The cheapest iPhone 8 deal we've come across recently is from Virgin Mobile, offering the phone for a rock-bottom £27 a month.
It comes with 1.2GB of data, 300 minutes and unlimited texts, and there's no up-front cost. However, you are tied into a three-year deal - not something that famously novelty-happy iPhone users will necessarily welcome.
