Olympic gymnast racks up £3,700 roaming bill playing Pokemon Go
If you’re heading abroad this year and – like millions of others – are hooked on Pokemon Go, you might want to learn from Kohei Uchimura’s mistake.
Mr Uchimura, a Japanese gymnast preparing for the Rio Olympics, managed to run up a roaming bill of £3,700 playing the augmented reality game.
The reigning all-around gymnastics Olympic and world champion downloaded Pokemon Go after landing in Sao Paulo for a pre-Olympic training camp.
He quickly became hooked, but was unaware that he didn’t have a flat rate for overseas data usage.
Fellow gymnast Kenzo Shirai said his teammate “looked dead at the team meal that day” after checking his bill.
Mr Uchimera has apparently been lucky and avoided the 500,000 yen bill. After contacting his phone company, he will only have to pay a daily flat rate of 3,000 yen.
“I really lucked out,” he told Japan’s Kyodo News.
Earlier this week, Cable.co.uk reported that EE customers were having roaming problems, leaving them unable to send texts or make calls, let alone get online to play Pokemon Go.
