OnePlus 6 unveiled with large screen and iPhone X-style notch

Thursday, May 17th 2018 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

OnePlus has unveiled its latest flagship phone, the OnePlus 6, at a sold-out launch event in London.

The new device features an all-glass design and one of the most powerful processors on the market, as well as a battery that will get you through the day on just a half-hour charge.

It also has an ultra-wide 6.28-inch screen with an iPhone X-style notch at the top, which houses its 16MP front-facing camera. Design-wise, it’s quite a shift from last year’s OnePlus 5T but is very 2018 – the Huawei P20 is one of a number of other phones to have already copied Apple’s look.

The OnePlus 6 will be available in Mirror Black, which showcases that all-glass design, Midnight Black with its matte black finish and S-shaped line when light hits the back of the phone, and Silk White, which uses pearl powder to create a subtle shimmering effect.

Running on OxygenOS, OnePlus’ own operating system, this is an Android phone so you’ll have access to Google Play and all that jazz but via what is claimed to be a “faster, cleaner and more customisable” Android experience.

"With the OnePlus 6, we challenged ourselves to deliver an external design as smooth and elegant as the work we've done inside the device," said OnePlus founder and CEO Pete Lau. "We're proud of what we've accomplished, and we hope our users are too."

'One of the best phones in the market'

O2 continues to be the exclusive home of OnePlus in the UK, so you like the look of the new handset your options are limited.

You’ll be able to buy the OnePlus 6 from 22 May or pre-order in-store to pick up your phone a day early. Prices start at £40 a month, plus £19.99 upfront, for a 4GB data plan. A 4GB tariff with the iPhone X on O2 will set you back £68 a month and £69.99 upfront so there’s some big savings to be had if it’s the look of the phone you’re after and not the presence of an Apple logo.

Magnus McDonald, director of product and category management at O2: “As the exclusive UK partner for OnePlus we are really excited to be part of another fantastic launch, this time, of the OnePlus 6. We’re proud to yet again bring one of the best phones in the market to O2 customers – continuing to offer great choice and quality.

“We’re delighted to have been on this journey since 2016 and watching our partnership grow as demand for OnePlus exceeds all our expectations. We look forward to continue working collaboratively with OnePlus and further building on our successful partnership.”

If you don’t want to go with O2, you will also be able to buy the OnePlus 6 directly from the manufacturer at oneplus.com, with prices starting at £469 for the Mirror Black edition with 64GB of storage.
