Openreach reveals latest extension to ultrafast broadband rollout

Tuesday, June 26th 2018 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Openreach has revealed plans to install ultrafast broadband in a further 59 locations around the UK.

The company, which is part of the BT group, will use Gfast technology to provide more than 370,000 homes and businesses with broadband speeds of 100Mbps.

Gfast delivers these speeds by transmitting powerful signals over existing broadband infrastructure – generally a combination of fibre cables and traditional copper telephone lines.

Critics say Gfast is a stop-gap solution but Openreach has defended the technology, which allows it to make ultrafast speeds available to more people, more quickly, than if it solely focussed on fibre to the premises (FTTP) broadband.

Openreach company is also extending the reach of its FTTP network and is aiming to connect three million premises to full fibre by the end of 2020.

The latest Gfast rollout adds to the 46 locations in which it has already been deployed. Among the places set to benefit in the coming months are Birmingham, Lancaster, Leeds, Cardiff, Aberdeen, Southampton, Tamworth and Wolverhampton.

'A step ahead'

Kim Mears, managing director for strategic infrastructure development at Openreach, said: “Britons are using their home broadband connections more than ever – consuming more than double the amount of data than they did just three years ago.

“A mass of new apps and services which demand higher quality broadband connections are becoming parts of our daily lives in our homes and at work – like virtual and augmented reality and more sophisticated online gaming, education and healthcare.

“That’s why we’re making this huge investment in upgrading the network, to make sure we stay a step ahead of that demand.”

Openreach said it will continue to roll out FTTP to rural areas, working with the government to bring future-proof infrastructure to some of the UK’s hardest to reach communities.

The full list of locations to benefit from the latest Gfast rollout is: Aberdeen Denburn, Acocks Green, Altrincham, Aylesbury, Bedford, Birmingham Central, Bishops Stortford, Boscombe, Bowes Park, Bury St. Edmunds, Bury, Byfleet, Cardiff, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Chester, Cosham, Didsbury, Erdington, Gipsy Hill, Guildford, Hampton, Harlow, Harrogate, Headingley, Heywood, Kingston, Lancaster, Leamington Spa, Leeds, Llantrisant, Maidstone, Market Harborough, Mile End, Morley, Narborough, North Finchley, Paignton, Plymouth, Rugby, Shipley, Slough, South Kensington, Southampton, Southend Town, St Albans, Stockton Heath, Swadlincote, Tamworth, Taunton, Telford Wellington, Tunbridge Wells, Walthamstow, Weston Super Mare, Windsor, Wolverhampton, Woodhouse (Berkshire), Woodley, York.
