Openreach to extend fibre broadband network in north Swindon

Friday, July 1st 2016 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Faster broadband will be made available to every home and business in the Priory Vale area of Swindon following a successful trial in the area.

Around 500 homes in Priory Vale took part in Openreach’s recent trial of what it calls ‘plug and play’ fibre to the premises (FTTP) broadband.

That technology, which sees fibre cables running all the way to customer’s homes and offers speeds up to 330Mbps, will now be extended to around 1,000 homes and businesses.

A further 5,500 will get access to fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) broadband, which uses traditional copper wires to connect each property to the cabinet.

Those households and businesses will be able to enjoy speeds of up to 80Mbps, depending how far they are from their nearest cabinet.

Work on expanding the network is due to start next month, with services made available in spring 2017.

Kim Mears, Openreach’s managing director for infrastructure delivery, said: “We’re delighted to be rolling-out fibre to every home and business in Priory Vale.

“We’ve already enjoyed a very successful trial of ‘plug-and-play’ FTTP technology and now have decided to carry out further major investment to expand our superfast and ultrafast broadband networks in this area.”

Swindon North MP Justin Tomlinson said: “This is a fantastic and vital announcement.

'Welcome boost'

“For years I’ve worked with fellow local residents to push for access to superfast fibre broadband and we know from the successful pilots, demand will be very, very strong.

“It is a credit to BT that they have worked with us to deliver this solution, a real welcome boost to our local community.”

Paul Coles, south west regional manager for BT, said: “Residents and businesses in Priory Vale will now find out for themselves that whatever you do on the internet you can do it better with fibre broadband.

“Families who need to connect a number of different devices to the internet at the same time will notice an immediate improvement, while small businesses and homeworkers will be able to share information and large files more easily and quickly with their colleagues and customers.”

Last month, Virgin Media announced that it would be expanding its fibre network in Swindon – including Priory Vale.

The provider is expanding its network to cover a further 7,000 homes and businesses in the town as part of its £3bn Project Lightning programme.
