Our pick of the top 5 comedy stand-ups to watch on Netflix

Tuesday, February 27th 2018 by Emma Woollacott

It's freezing outside, you've got a filthy cold, and the news is all gloom and doom. You probably haven't got a lot to laugh about as you settle down in front of the TV and switch on to Netflix.

You could go with the flow with a political documentary, maybe, or a bit of Scandi noir. But it's well known that laughter boosts the immune system and helps you fight off winter bugs, and we think you should always put your health first.

Here's our pick of the top five stand-up comedy specials on Netflix: sit back, have a giggle and ignore the world outside.

Chris Rock: Tamborine

New out in February, this is the first stand-up special in ten years from Emmy and Grammy award-winning comedian Chris Rock - and it's certainly been worth waiting for. With his trademark sharp humour, Rock covers a wide range of contemporary issues, including fatherhood, infidelity and the fertile ground of contemporary US politics. Chris Rock: Tamborine is directed by Bo Burnham and filmed at New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Katherine Ryan: In Trouble

Katherine Ryan is only the second UK-based act to get a global special streaming in 190 countries, but it's easy to see why she made the cut. At the end of a sell-out tour across the UK, Ryan explores themes including white privilege, family dynamics, the power of celebrity, ageism and even Canadian defence protocol. You'll also find out the surprising body part that was apparently the main focus of attention for her ex-boyfriend.

Ricky Gervais: Humanity

Many people wouldn't list 'humanity' as one of Ricky Gervais's most obvious qualities, but it's the title of his new original Netflix stand up comedy special, his first in seven years.

Filmed at the Apollo Hammersmith in London, the Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning British comedian returns to the stage in London with a scathing special about the human race that touches on aging, celebrity, becoming spoiled, his perspective on having children and more. It premieres on March 13.

Amy Schumer: The Leather Special

Emmy and Peabody Award-winning comedian Amy Schumer is all over the news this week thanks to a very unconventional addition to her wedding vows. And her comedy is no less controversial, tackling everything from binge drinking and her relationship with her boyfriend - now the lucky husband - to how an ordinary girl can cope with fame. Also directed by Schumer, The Leather Special was filmed at Denverís Bellco Theater last year.

Dave Chappelle: Equanimity & The Bird Revelation

Not one but two stand-up specials from Emmy Award-winning Dave Chappelle debuted on New Year's Eve: Equanimity and The Bird Revelation. In a special homecoming performance filmed in front of a packed house at the historic Warner Theater in Washington DC, Equanimity examines culture and class, politics and the spectre of getting old. Meanwhile, The Bird Revelation, filmed at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles, doubles the fun with some red-hot new material.
