PBS America launches on demand Amazon Prime channel

Friday, September 15th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

PBS America, the British TV channel from America’s Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), has launched an on demand channel on Amazon Prime.

The ad-free service is available to Prime members for £3.49 a month and features a wealth of in-depth science, history and current affairs programming.

This includes the back catalogue of filmmaker Ken Burns including Prohibition, The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, The Dust Bowl and the multi-award winning The Civil War – the most watch TV series ever on American public service television.

Subscribers can also watch the Oscar-nominated feature documentary Last Days in Vietnam from the American Experience series.

“We’re thrilled to be launching PBS America On Demand into the exciting OTT arena with Amazon Channels here in the UK,” said Richard Kingsbury, general manager of PBS America.

OTT stands for ‘over the top’, a term used to describe video or audio content delivered over the internet independent of a cable or satellite TV provider.

As well as being able to stream shows including NOVA and FRONTLINE, subscribers can also download programmes and watch them later offline.

“There are a lot of viewers out there without access to Freesat, Virgin or Sky who will now be able cherry-pick the best of the PBS America offerings to watch at their leisure,” said Mr Kingsbury.

“The online channel will include Ken Burns’s impressive back catalogue, which we expect will attract new fans after his latest epic The Vietnam War airs on BBC4 in a few weeks time.”

PBS America is also available on Sky channel 534, Virgin Media channel 276 and Freesat channel 155.

Amazon Prime added channels to its subscription service earlier this year, with prices for individual channels ranging from £1.49 to £9.99 a month.

The fees are on top of the price of Prime membership, which is £79 a year or £7.99 a month.

PBS America is offering purely on demand programming but other channels such as ITV Hub+ and Eurosport Player also offer live content.
