Personal details of 133,000 customers were accessed in Three data breach
The personal details of more than 130,000 customers were accessed by criminals in the cyber attack on the Three mobile network.
In a statement, CEO Dave Dyson said the primary purpose of the attack had not been to steal customer information but to acquire new handsets illegally using Three’s phone upgrade system.
Eight customers were successfully upgraded by fraudsters, who intended to intercept the new devices and sell them on.
And thousands of customers’ details were accessed, including names, dates of birth, Three account numbers, billing dates, phone numbers and email addresses.
“In total, information from 133,827 customer accounts was obtained but no bank details, passwords, pin numbers, payment information or credit/debit card information are stored on the upgrade system in question,” said Mr Dyson.
He said Three would be contacting all affected customers to confirm what had been accessed and said “increased security” was now in place for those customers’ accounts.
Mr Dyson said Three has been working closely with law enforcement agencies – and three arrests were made last week in relation to the attack.
“I understand that our customers will be concerned about this issue and I would like to apologise for this and any inconvenience this has caused,” he said.
“Once we became aware of the suspicious activity, we took immediate steps to block it and add additional layers of security to the system while we investigated the issue.”
Three is warning customers to be wary of anyone contacting them and has issued a reminder for customers to never give out banking information.
“If it is a call from Three and you are in any doubt that it is genuine, call us back via 333 from your Three mobile,” the company said. “We advise the same for other service providers.”
