Roku has started rolling out enhanced voice search on Streaming Stick+
Roku has released a software update that will allow you to search for movies and shows on its devices using just your voice.
The UK rollout of the software containing the Enhanced Voice Search feature, started last week (1 May).
If you use Roku through the mobile app or have a Roku Streaming Stick+ you’ll be able to use the new feature once your Roku player has been updated with the latest Roku OS 8.1.
So, what is it and do you need it? Once the new software is up and running on your Roku device, it will become easier to search for the show you’re looking for. If you are used to using a personal assistant device like the Google Home or Amazon Echo, or just have regular chats with Siri, you’ll find this updated feature a doddle.
The Enhanced Voice Search understands natural language so don’t worry about your accent. You can search for movies, shows, actors and directors, as well as launch streaming channels, in a more conversational tone.
'Show me comedies'
It’s pretty simple to get started. You can search by saying phrases like, “show me comedies”, “find The Grand Tour” or “launch hayu”, and you’re good to go.
The new software update will also enable private listening for up to four devices simultaneously for all Roku players.
The Roku mobile app acts as a remote, streams media from a mobile device to the TV, includes a keyboard and offers features like voice search and private listening. You can download it on both Android and Apple devices.
If you don’t currently have a Roku streaming player and quite like the sound of the new update, it’s not too late for you to invest in one of the devices. The Streaming Stick+ that we mentioned above is a one-off cost of £79.99. It lets you control all of your favourite streaming apps such as Netflix and NOW TV, all in one place.
For something a bit cheaper, there’s the Roku Express for £29.99, It’s not quite as hi-tech or 4K UHD ready but is still great way of streaming to your TV. Our in-house gadget expert had the chance to test it out.
