Roundup - the best deals this week in broadband, TV, mobile, energy and tech

Friday, February 16th 2018 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

In a week that brought us both Pancake Day and Valentine’s Day, we wrote about loads of things that had nothing to do with either pancakes or love.

That’s not to say the deals we brought you aren’t flipping brilliant or that we didn’t love writing about them – they are and we did, honest. And to prove it we’re going to round up all the best ones here (well, the ones that are still available, anyway).

We’ll kick off with broadband, because why not?

Broadband deals

BT has upped the amount of cashback on offer with its broadband deals to a whopping £175 if you take its top fibre package. And you get free BT Sport with all of its deals at the moment, which is great for sports fans as the Champions League came back with a bang this week.

There’s a corking TalkTalk cashback deal available exclusively via Cable.co.uk in which you get a £70 voucher when you sign up to TalkTalk’s ‘Faster Fibre’ plan. You can choose to spend your £70 at Amazon, Tesco, Debenhams or even Pizza Express. Yummy.

Continuing the cashback theme, EE will give you £125 if you take its top fibre broadband plan, as well as 50GB of mobile data to use on your phone.

EE even has a new plan to reach you if you live out in the sticks, as it claims its 4G home broadband antenna can deliver speeds of more than 100Mbps even in remote rural locations.

And SSE is offering to fix the price of your broadband for three years if you're also an SSE energy customer, or for a year if you're not.

TV deals

Virgin Media is offering discounts on a number of TV bundles, with packages combining both fast broadband and a fancy new V6 TV set top box starting at £33 a month.

If a Sky Q box is more to your liking, Sky is also offering competitively-priced bundles having dropped the price of Sky Entertainment and Sky Unlimited Broadband to £40 a month.

If you’re already with Sky and would like to upgrade some of your equipment to reflect your favourite TV show, you can. Game of Thrones Sky Q remote covers (we’re not joking) start at £7.49 and you can also get Star Wars, football and even Frozen covers for your clicker.

Or, if you’d been thinking your sound set-up just isn’t doing your fave show justice, Sky will give you a £50 discount on a Soundbox if you take out a Sky Q Multiscreen subscription at £12 a month on top of your regular bill.

Energy deals

British Gas will give you up to £100 cashback if you take out HomeCare cover to protect your boiler, central heating and a number of other bits around your home depending on the level of cover you choose.

SSE is also incentivising customers to take out heating cover, offering two months’ free cover to anyone taking its Heating Cover on a 12-month plan.

Mobile deals

Sky Mobile has a couple of great deals to tempt you into buying a Sony phone on of its its plans. Buy any Sony phone on Sky Mobile and you’ll get a free Sky Store voucher worth £16.99, pick an Xperia XA2, an XZ Premium or an XZ1 and you’ll also get a free PS4 and Gran Turismo Sport.

Taking aim squarely at heavy data users, Vodafone is offering 16GB for the price of 4GB on a number of plans for premium smartphones including the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S8.

Vodafone will also give you 5GB for the price of 1GB on its own-brand Smart E8 handset.

At iD Mobile, you can get a free pair of h.ear on 2 Mini Wireless headphones (catchy name, right?) with the new Sony Xperia XA2.

Three is promising savings up to £360 on phones including the iPhone 7, Galaxy S8 and Honor 9 while giffgaff is offering new and refurbished iPhones at pretty reasonable prices, including the SE for just £11.62 a month.

At O2, you can get the iPhone 7 with 4GB of data for £40 a month or the OnePlus 5T with four times the usual amount of data on a number of different tariffs.

You can get double data allowances on some pay monthly plans from BT Mobile, including the Nokia 3 and Samsung Galaxy J3, which are free with either the Perfect All-Rounder or Max plans.

Oh yeah, and we’ve rounded up all the best Samsung Galaxy Note 8 deals so you don’t have to. You’re welcome.

SIM deals

You’ll have to be quick as this deal ends next week but Virgin is offering a mahoosive 100GB of data for £20 a month on a 12-month contract.

At the other end of the scale, iD Mobile is pushing its “cheapest ever SIM” which gives you 500MB for £3.99 a month. Somewhere in the middle is Plusnet's latest SIM offer of 2GB for £7 a month.

If phone contracts aren’t for you, you may be pleased to hear that O2 has cut prices on its classic pay as you go tariff to 3p a minute for calls, 2p for texts and 1p per MB of data.

Tech deals

Those looking to buy a tablet this weekend would do well to consider the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 9.7, it’s available from £18.99 a month on O2 and buying by Sunday 18 February from certain providers would also bag you some sweet free concert tickets.

Last but not least, there has been excitement surrounding the launch of Apple’s smart speaker, the Homepod, even if it might leave a white ring if you put it on a wooden surface.
