Ryan Reynolds and Michael Bay sign up for big budget Netflix film Six Underground

Tuesday, May 29th 2018 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Netflix is bringing Transformers director Michael Bay and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds together for what is expected to be the most expensive movie the streaming service has ever made.

Six Underground will not only star Reynolds but is being developed from a script by Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese.

Deadline is suggesting that the film will cost in the region of £150m to make, with production set to start this summer for a 2019 release.

That figure would dwarf the £90m Netflix spent on Bright, starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton, which was panned by critics but was apparently watched by a lot of people and is getting a sequel.

According to Critical Hit some of Netflix’s most well-received features, such as Okja and The Cloverfield Paradox, have cost more in the region of £40-50 million.

Netflix isn’t giving away much about Six Underground yet, other than the fact it is being directed by Bay and co-produced by Skydance Media, which has previously produced the Netflix hits Grace and Frankie, and Altered Carbon.

But Hollywood Reporter says the plot revolves around six billionaires who fake their own deaths and form an elite team to take down bad guys.

Northern Rescue

Netflix has also announced the details of a new original drama that will start filming next month in Canada.

Northern Rescue, which will be a co-production with Canadian broadcaster CBC, is described as a heartwarming family drama and will star William Baldwin (MacGyver) and Kathleen Robertson (Murder in the First).

Baldwin plays John West, a man who, following the death of his wife, decides to pack up and move out of the city to his small northern hometown to take command of the local search and rescue service.

Along with his three children and their aunt, played by Robertson, John must come to terms with his wife’s death while adapting to his new surroundings.
