Save £106 on the Samsung Galaxy S7 in Vodafone's Big Winter Sale
There are plenty of people out there for whom only the latest, fanciest phone will do, but you'll have to accept that you'll be paying very dear for the privilege.
Buy what was the most-have item a year or two ago, though, and you'll often find you can snap up a real bargain.
And with Samsung expected to launch its new top-of-the-range Galaxy 9 phone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the end of February, there are now quite a few deals to be had on the Galaxy S7, launched in 2016.
The latest is an offer from Vodafone that's claimed to save £106 over the course of the two-year contract. Part of the company's Big Winter Sale, it's available only until the end of January, though, so you'll have to move pretty fast.
There's a fairly nominal £10 up-front fee, with the monthly cost of the Red Extra 24-month plan just £28. For this, you get 1GB of 4G data, along with unlimited minutes and texts.
Vodafone Global Roaming lets you use your home plan in 110 destinations worldwide, covering data, minutes and texts. You also get a free three-month trial of Secure Net, with the security protection costing £12 a month thereafter.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 may be a couple of years old, but it was once the company's flagship product and still has a very respectable spec.
Boost your data allowance with a Vodafone pass
It boasts a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display, great for gaming or watching videos, and a 12MP camera that was one of the first of its kind. It comes with expandable storage, and while it lacks the ultra-thin bezel of later models, it still has a stunning design. Colours include black, gold, and pink gold.
Of course 1GB of data isn't exactly a vast amount, and you'll probably want to up that in one way or another. And you can add various extras to the Vodafone package, including a video pass for £7 a month giving limitless access to Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, DisneyLife and more. A music pass costs only a fiver, with endless data for Spotify, TIDAL, Deezer, and other services.
A £5 social pass allows endless time-wasting on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest, while if WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Viber are more your thing, then you may want to plump for the £3 chat pass. The whole lot together will cost you £15 a month with a combo pass.
For purposes of comparison, EE is currently offering the S7 with 1GB data for an up-front cost of £49.99 plus £35.49 a month. For that, you get unlimited texts and 750 minutes.
At Three, 1GB data with unlimited minutes and texts costs £79 up front and £32 a month.
But it's Virgin that reckons it's got the best deal on the market, and looking at the price that seems more than plausible. The Galaxy S7 with 1.2GB, unlimited texts and 300 minutes costs just £19 a month, with no up-front cost at all.
