Sky and Devialet launch 'immersive' Sky Soundbox speaker unit

Thursday, July 27th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Sky has teamed up with an upmarket audio company to create the new Sky Soundbox sound system.

According to Sky and manufacturer Devialet, the device delivers an immersive 360 degree sound from a single speaker unit.

Sky Soundbox will be offered to new and existing Sky customers for £299 when it goes on sale in the autumn, and to new and existing Sky Q Multiscreen customers for £249.

It will also be available to non-Sky customers for £799.

Sky Soundbox is compatible with Sky+ and standalone TVs but when paired with Sky Q gives the user access to exclusive sound modes that automatically refine the audio for a range of Sky programmes.

The device uses audio technologies developed for Devialet’s Expert Pro amplifier and Phantom wireless speaker. It combines six woofers and three full-range speakers into a single compact device, and uses the walls in the home to reflect ambient sound around the room.

Sky Soundbox also marks the first time Devialet has partnered with another brand.

Sky CEO Stephen van Rooyen said: “Sound is a vital part of visual storytelling – whether you’re watching the season finale of your favourite drama, or an epic Premier League clash.

“That’s why we’ve partnered with audio industry leaders Devialet to launch Sky Soundbox and take the TV experience to the next level for our customers.

“Great TV deserves great audio – we believe Sky Soundbox is the Ultra HD of home audio.”

'Sound is the future of television'

Quentin Sannié, chief executive of Devialet, said: “Sound is the future of television. We are very proud to be partnering with Sky, to help them to unleash the full emotional impact of their content, through powerful, immersive, fully integrated sound.

“This first partnership illustrates our ability to pursue Devialet’s vision to enable revolutionary experiences through audio, and bring them to the widest number of people through partnerships with like-minded companies who are looking to challenge the status quo.”

Sky has also announced the introduction of Dolby Atmos to Sky Q.

Following a free software update later this summer, subscribers to Sky’s flagship service who have invested in a compatible home cinema system will be able to enjoy Premier League football matches with Dolby Atmos sounds and in Ultra HD.
