Sky and HBO announce Adnan Syed documentary series
Sky has announced plans to bring the four-part documentary series, The Case Against Adnan Syed, to Sky Atlantic.
Almost two decades ago, in 1999 an 18-year old student named Hae Min Lee disappeared and within six weeks, her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed was convicted for her murder. The problem is, he says he is innocent but can’t remember where he was the afternoon of her death; and his alibi has mysteriously gone missing.
The documentary was directed by Amy Berg, who was nominated for an Academy Award and is also responsible for the popular documentaries Deliver Us from Evil and West Memphis.
After the popularity of the ’Serial’ Podcast, the story of Adnan Syed and his fight to clear his name was catapulted into the limelight and inspired Berg to start work on this series.
Broken up into four hour-long episodes, the docu-series was produced by Working Title TV and Instinct Productions. We do not have a confirmed release date yet but in the UK you’ll be able to watch it on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV. In the US it will be shown on HBO.
’Most talked about murder case’
Zai Bennett, the director of programming at Sky Entertainment UK and Ireland, said: “We’ll be offering viewers a compelling window into one of the most talked-about murder cases in recent years. The hugely talented Amy Berg has unprecedented access to those closest to the investigation, which is sure to make unmissable viewing.”
Berg started working on the documentary in 2015, and took a closer look the events leading up to Hae Min Lee’s disappearance. Lee’s and Syed’s relationship started as a high school romance but was marred by cultural conflict.
We’ll get an inside look into the police investigation and the ground-breaking revelations that challenge the state’s case.
Following a lengthy court battle and being incarcerated for nearly 20 years, in March 2018, the Court of Special of Special Appeals ruled to vacate Syed’s conviction and granted him the retrial he has been waiting for.
