Sky Atlantic to show Trust starring Donald Sutherland and Hilary Swank
From the Academy Award-winning team of Danny Boyle, Simon Beaufoy and Christian Colson, staring Donald Sutherland and Hilary Swank, Trust tells the rebellious story of the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, heir to the Getty oil fortune.
If ever there was a case for being painfully rich, then surely nobody can carry that crown better than John Paul Getty III. Born into a life of privilege and with one of the richest men in the world as his grandfather, Getty’s world would forever be transformed by the events of his kidnapping from the Piazza Farnese in Rome on 10 July 1973 at the age of 16.
After his grandfather initially refused to pay any ransom, his kidnappers sent his family an envelope containing a lock of Paul’s hair and one of his ears, which had been sliced off. He was eventually released in December 1973 after a ransom of 2.2m USD had been paid. At his mother’s suggestion, Paul called his grandfather to thank him for paying the ransom but he refused to come to the phone.
This intriguing 10-part series will be available exclusively on Sky Atlantic respectively across the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany and Austria this spring.
Inspired by actual events, Trust delves into the trials and triumphs of one of America’s wealthiest and unhappiest families. Equal parts family history, dynastic saga and an examination of the corrosive power of money, Trust explores the complexities at the heart of every family, rich or poor.
