Sky attracts highest number of new customers for 11 years
Sky has announced its biggest growth in customer numbers in 11 years, with more than 242,000 new subscribers joining the broadband, TV and landline provider.
The figures, covering the nine months until the end of March 2015 and published today, show a 70% year-on-year increase in new customers.
The company also announced over one million new paid-for subscription products across the Sky Group, taking revenue up to £8.4bn and operating profits to over £1bn.
Jeremy Darroch, Sky Group chief executive, said: “We have delivered an excellent third quarter as customers across the enlarged Sky group respond to the quality and breadth of what we offer.
“In all, we attracted almost 70% more new customers than the prior year and over one million new products. By continuing the strong operating momentum of the first half, we have grown revenues by 5% and operating profit by 20% over the nine months.”
The announcement came a week after the company expanded its Buy & Keep service to non-Sky customers.
Under the scheme, customers can purchase a movie to view on their TV, stream and download it on a mobile device, and also get the DVD delivered to their home a few days later.
Game of Thrones
The service was originally launched to Sky TV customers in April 2014, but has been opened up to non-Sky customers in the UK and Ireland, as well as being made available across multiple mobile devices.
Sky credited some of its success in part to the launch of the fifth series of HBO hit Game of Thrones, which launched exclusively to Sky customers within 24 hours of its launch in the US.
The fantasy drama attracted an overnight audience of over 1.5 million in the UK and Ireland, up almost 30% on the prior series.
Mr Darroch continued: “We are particularly excited by our progress in original drama. Fortitude debuted as the most successful drama ever on Sky Atlantic in the UK, 1992 opened as our most successful original scripted series in Italy, while Germany took its first steps in international co-production with 100 Code.
“As these results demonstrate, our teams are working well together right across the new Sky.”
