Sky boss dismisses Virgin Media TiVo threat
Jeremy Darroch said Virgin's TiVo service is a "technical gizmo".
Sky chief executive Jeremy Darroch has written off Virgin Media's TiVo service as little more than a "technical gizmo".
The satellite broadcaster's own pay TV product has come in for criticism from some parties who have claimed the TiVo facility is technologically superior.
However, speaking on a conference call to mark Sky's first quarter financial results publication, Mr Darroch insisted the high-tech aspects are not the most important factor for the majority of customers.
Instead, he claimed viewers consider the "whole experience", including the interface and how simple it is to use, reports Broadband TV News.
Mr Darroch went on to express satisfaction at the current Sky+ HD set-top box, commenting: "If we can come up with good ideas to develop it then we'll be open to that, but I think the Sky+ box remains very successful and I'm very pleased with it."
Sky signed up 26,000 new TV customers in the three months to September 30th 2011, while its overall subscriber base grew by 77,000 households.
As of July 26th, Virgin Media's TiVo service had been installed in approximately 50,000 homes.
