Sky Cinema to launch month-long dedicated sci-fi channel

Thursday, September 7th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Sky Cinema is giving its customers a month of top sci-fi films with the launch of a dedicated new channel.

The Sky-Fi channel will run from Saturday 9 September to Sunday 8 October and will feature the entire Star Wars series including The Force Awakens and Rogue One, all 10 original Star Trek movies, Spielberg classic Close Encounters of The Third Kind and James Cameron’s The Terminator.

It will also show the theatrical version of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner ahead of the release of Blade Runner 2049 in cinemas.

The channel, which will kick off on Saturday with a countdown of ‘The Greatest Sci-Fi Movies in the Universe’ will be available to all Sky Cinema and NOW TV customers at no extra cost.

Sky Cinema group director Ian Lewis said: “Sky Cinema Sky-Fi will bring together all that's great about the genre, from iconic franchises such as Star Wars and Star Trek, to classics such as Blade Runner and Close Encounters.

“It is another innovative offering for our customers bringing the sci-fi genre to life, re-affirming our position as the UK and Ireland's leading in-home movies service.”

Sky Cinema Sky-Fi is the third temporary channel launched this year by Sky following Sky Cinema Oscars in February and Sky Cinema Fast and Furious in April.

Sky is also planning to launch dedicated channels for Halloween and Christmas in the coming months.

Sky Cinema Oscars featured full live coverage of the 89th Academy Awards as well as more than 100 Oscar-winning films including American Beauty, A Beautiful Mind, The Godfather, Inside Out, Jerry Maguire and Raging Bull as well as 2016 winners The Revenant and Bridge of Spies.

Sky Cinema Fast and Furious celebrated the cinema release of the eighth edition of the franchise by giving customers a chance to watch the first seven movies again.

Viewers were also treated to an exclusive clip from Fast & Furious 8.
