Sky Mobile goes on nationwide sale

Friday, January 6th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Sky Mobile is now available to new customers after it went on nationwide sale for the first time yesterday.

The service was announced at the end of November but at first was only available to existing Sky customers.

Sky Mobile allows customers to keep their unused data for up to three years in a virtual ‘piggybank’ and redeem it whenever they like – and to change their mobile plan each month if they wish.

Existing Sky customers also get free UK calls and texts with all Sky Mobile data plans and sync their Sky+ recordings with their phone.

Sky’s mobile offering is currently limited to pay monthly SIM-only plans although the service, which uses O2’s network, is expected to offer Apple and Samsung handsets later this year.

Stephen van Rooyen, Sky’s UK and Ireland chief executive, said: “We’re excited that Sky Mobile goes on nationwide sale today, which is great news for UK consumers.

“Right now mobile contracts are inflexible and confusing and we all know people are buying more data than they need to avoid those extra charges.

“With Sky Mobile we’ve provided the solution, offering flexibility and great value so our customers’ unused data will be theirs to keep and they can create a plan that’s right for them, month to month.

“And there’s even more benefits for Sky TV customers with free UK calls and texts, plus the ability to sync with their Sky+ box.”

At its November launch, Sky Mobile said its research showed people use less than half the data they pay for – with UK consumers wasting a total of more than £2bn a year.

New data revealed this week by Sky suggests almost 20m smartphone users in the UK are deliberately buying more data than they need each month for fear of being overcharged.

Almost three quarters (72%) of those buying unnecessary data lose around 1GB of their allowance every month – the equivalent of losing out on downloading 200 songs or 500 photos; browsing 10,000 websites or watching two hours of video.

One in five (21%) say they have no idea how much data they have left at the end of each month.
