Sky One drama Save Me will return for a second series

Friday, March 23rd 2018 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

If you’ve been enjoying Sky One’s critically acclaimed drama Save Me then we have some news that is sure to brighten up your Friday – it’s coming back for a second series.

The show is written by Lennie James, who also stars as unlikely hero Nelly Rowe, a man whose world is turned upside down when he’s arrested and accused of kidnapping his 13-year-old daughter Jody, a child he barely knew existed.

The first episode, which premiered in February, was watched by some 1.73 million people. It must have struck a chord because, with all six episodes available as a box set, more than a million people watched the entire series in less than a fortnight.

In fact, almost 700,000 watched every episode in the first week alone, making Save Me the most rapidly binged box set ever released on Sky.

With critics also praising the series, it’s no surprise that Sky has confirmed it will return with James reprising his role as Nelly and Suranne Jones once again appearing as his ex-partner, and Jody’s mum, Claire.

Save Me also stars Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness as Jody, as well as Stephen Graham and Adrian Edmondson.

'Fantastic energy'

Lennie James said: “I am so chuffed that we get to keep telling the story of Save Me. Thank you to Sky Atlantic and a huge thank you to everyone who watched our little show and enjoyed it. More to come as soon as I can sit down to write it.”

Suranne Jones said: “I am so thrilled to be returning for the second series of Save Me. The reaction to the show has been amazing and I love being part of a great ensemble piece.

“Lennie has fantastic energy and his writing is so real and poetic. I cannot wait to read what he creates next.”

Earlier this week, Sky confirmed that another of the broadcaster’s original productions, Britannia, would also be returning for a second series after accumulating more than 10 million downloads and on-demand views across Sky’s various platforms. Sky productions Riviera and Tin Star have also been picked up for second seasons.

Anne Mensah, head of drama at Sky, said: “Save Me is a very special Sky original production. It has connected with our audience in a truly visceral way with many viewers watching one episode after another and telling us they simply couldn’t tear themselves away from Lennie’s memorable characters and compulsive storylines.

“This is an extraordinary show brought to life by a wonderful cast and crew and we’re honoured to welcome them back to Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.”

You can get Sky Atlantic by signing up to the Sky Entertainment package, which costs £20 a month plus an additional £20 set up fee. You can also access the channel via a NOW TV Entertainment pass, which usually costs £7.99 a month although you can currently get three months for that price.
