Sky Q in more than a million UK homes

Thursday, April 20th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

More than a million customers have signed up to Sky Q since its launch in February 2016.

Announcing its latest results, Sky said 40,000 new customers joined the company between January and March this year, taking it to 12.7m UK customers in total.

Sky said churn had remained stable despite it upping the price of line rental and many of its call rates.

Recent weeks have seen voice search functionality added to Sky Q boxes and from the summer users will be able to record six programmes while watching a seventh.

Sky also entered the mobile market in January with a range of SIM-only deals and more recently starting offering handsets – and giving customers the ability to upgrade after 12 months.

Group CEO Jeremy Darroch said: “We’ve made good progress on the growth plans that we laid out. We launched Sky Mobile to create a substantial new source of revenue and profits.

“We have continued to improve the customer experience with further enhancements to our Sky Q and Sky+ platforms as well as the launch of our digital customer service via the My Sky app.”

Sky today announced a 250mUSD co-production deal with HBO to oversee the development of “world class” high-end drama series.

HBO’ chairman and CEO Richard Plepler said the two companies “have a long tradition in creating superior content for our customers”.

“Together we represent the best in television and combined we will raise the bar even higher in pay TV programming.”

Sky also said it will be showing Test cricket in Ultra HD for the first time this summer.

Sky Q customers will be able to watch every ball of England’s Test series against South Africa in Ultra HD throughout July and August.

Premier League football matches and Formula 1 grand prix are already available in Ultra HD.

Bryan Henderson, Sky Sports’ head of cricket, said the picture quality of Ultra HD is four times that of HD TV.

“It is a first for Sky Sports and we can’t wait to bring you closer to the action, excitement and drama that the South Africa Test series will deliver this summer.”
