Sky Q to get voice control feature and 'favourites' menu

Thursday, October 12th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Sky Q customers will be able to change channels and play their favourite shows using their voice by the end of the month.

The voice control feature allows users to speak commands such as ‘change channel to Sky Atlantic’ or ‘play The Walking Dead’ into their remote.

Using phrases like ‘go to Sky Store’ or ‘go to Sky Sports’ will help customers jump to the relevant part of the Sky Q menu.

Accessibility settings can also be changed using the new feature by saying things such as ‘turn on audio description’ or ‘turn on subtitles’.

Sky Q already has a voice search function, which Sky says has been used more than nine million times by customers.

Luke Bradley-Jones, Sky’s chief marketing officer, said: “Our customers already love Voice Search on Sky Q and we think they are going to love Voice Control even more.

“You will be able to find your recordings, rewind an amazing goal to watch again or change channel all through a simple voice command. It’s a quicker, easier and more fun way to get to the shows, sports and films you want to watch.”

Sky is also launching a new ‘Favourites’ menu in the TV guide so customers can scroll to the channels they want quicker.

Sky Q will suggest an initial list based on viewing habits but users will be able to edit it.

Customers with a 2TB box will also get a dedicated Ultra HD section within My Q, helping them find a wider range of UHD content.

Sky, publishing its financial results today, said its investment in TV content was paying off as viewing to Sky channels had increased 10% year-on-year.

“The first series of our home-grown drama Riviera achieved 20m downloads, becoming our highest ever rated original commission,” said CEO Jeremy Darroch, “and Game of Thrones has become the most watched series ever on Sky.”

Mr Darroch also said 51% more customers were joining Sky than a year ago and the milestone of 60m subscription products (broadband, phone, pay TV and mobile) had been passed.
