A city-wide fibre optic broadband network is to be rolled out across York.

Sky and TalkTalk, two of the UK's biggest internet service providers, are linking up with network operator CityFibre to bring ultrafast broadband to York.

The three parties have created a joint venture company and are planning to install pure fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) infrastructure across the city, bringing speeds of up to 1Gbps to tens of thousands of homes and businesses.

Leveraging CityFibre's existing fibre optic network in York, Sky and TalkTalk will offer competing broadband services to end users, with the first subscribers set to be connected in 2015.

Fujitsu will work alongside the partners on deploying the FTTP infrastructure, which will give Sky and TalkTalk the opportunity to trial a new, cost-effective approach to rolling out a future-proof broadband network without relying on BT.

The project will see York become the first UK city to be connected to high-speed fibre optic broadband on a city-wide basis.

James Alexander, Leader of City of York Council, commented: "Gaining ultrafast broadband across the city is a huge boost for our economy, providing significant new opportunities for businesses based here and better quality and value to our residents."
