Sky to launch Now TV Smart Box

Friday, January 29th 2016 by Cable.co.uk

Sky has announced it will release an advanced version of its Now TV box later this year.

Now TV is Sky’s subscription-free online streaming service. Customers can pay for passes that give them a months worth of access to Sky Sports, Sky Movies or Sky entertainment channels.

The new ‘Smart Box’ will bring together the pay TV content available via Now TV with over 60 live free-to-air channels.

Additionally, existing Now TV customers will see a new user interface (UI) on their TVs from February.

Features of the new-look UI include editorial recommendations of what to watch across catch up TV apps and pay TV and a revised ‘Best of Catch Up’ section.

Gideon Katz, director of Now TV said: “The launch of our new homepage on the NOW TV Box will make it easier than ever for our customers to quickly find and watch their favourite shows.

“And when the new Now TV Smart Box arrives later this year, it will be the perfect one-stop box to get a contract-free, flexible way of watching the best of pay TV and free-to-air content all in one place.”

Pricing details and further information on the new Smart Box will be made available later in the year.

Sky Q launch

The announcement comes on the same day Sky revealed its next generation TV service Sky Q will be available to buy from 9 February.

Sky Q will allow customers to record three shows and watch a fourth live, stream content at home using the Sky Q app and download shows to their tablet to watch offline.

Sky Q packages will start from £42 per month, with a one-off set-up fee of £99. For existing Sky+ customers the monthly cost will be “around £12 extra compared with their current Sky+ package”, according to a statement from the provider.

Sky also announced its financial results for the second half of 2015 last week. The provider reported 337,000 new customers – its highest UK and Ireland customer growth for 10 years. Its revenue grew by 5% to £5.7bn, with its profits up 12% to £747m during the same period.
