Sky to show 3D darts through its digital TV service

Tuesday, July 13th 2010 by Cable.co.uk

Bundle provider Sky has revealed it is planning to broadcast 3D darts coverage through its digital TV service.

Digital TV provider Sky has confirmed that darts is set to become the fifth sport to be shown in 3D through its broadcast platform later this month.

The company, which also offers broadband and home phone services, has revealed that the semi-finals and final of the StanJames.com World Matchplay in Blackpool will be shown in the format at over 1,000 venues in the UK and Ireland.

According to Sky Sports, the move will build on its previous 3D coverage of football, rugby union and cricket.

Sid Waddell, commentator for the broadcaster, said the plans marked "a revolution in darts TV broadcasting".

"For years I've described our coverage as resembling a rock and roll concert on your telly. Now it's going to resemble a rock and roll concert in your pub - I can't wait," he added.

Sky's 3D service is set to be launched for household subscribers later in the year, when TVs compatible with the format are more widely available.
