South London housing developments to get free Hyperoptic broadband
Six housing developments in south London are to get free broadband connections from Hyperoptic.
The provider has struck a deal with housing association The Hyde Group to offer its fibre broadband to residents.
Hyperoptic will run its fibre to the premises (FTTP) service into Eyot House, Hicks House and The Parker Building in Bermondsey and Pinter, Arden and Beckett House in Stockwell.
Two new-build sites in Southwark and Harrow will also be connected.
Social housing tenants will be able to access a free 2Mbps service from Hyperoptic.
Residents will also be able to pay for a range of broadband and landline options –a gigabit service giving 1,000Mbps download and uploads speeds, a 100Mbps service and a 20Mbps option.
All services can be ordered on a contract-free basis without the need for any credit checks.
Shaun Holdcroft, regional director of The Hyde Group, said: “We were looking for a partner who could do two things.
“Firstly they had to offer something to help our offline social tenants to get online, our latest figures show offline rates amongst our tenants are 23% compared to 14% in the rest of the UK.
“Secondly they had to have experience in providing their services in new-build developments as hyper-fast reliable broadband is increasingly expected by our new customers.
“Hyperoptic met these objectives fully and we are delighted to be the first housing association to work out a deal to provide fibre to our residents that benefits all our customers.”
The inclusion of new-build developments in the scheme will come as a relief to would-be residents. Cable.co.uk has heard from hundreds of new-build tenants and homeowners struggling with little or no broadband coverage.
Hyperoptic’s managing director Dana Tobak said: “Hyperoptic is renowned for setting the gold standard in fibre broadband.
“We passionately believe that reliable, fast broadband access should be the norm, not the exception.
“We are working hard to increase our UK footprint so even more people can enjoy living their online lives without compromise and bridge the digital divide.”
It is expected that services will be live across Hyde Housing’s pilot buildings by September 2016.
The agreement allows for further Hyde blocks, both existing and newly built, to be connected once the pilot has been completed – and comes as two more developments in and around the capital are promised high-speed connectivity.
Infrastructure provider GTC has signed a contract with property management group Lendlease to take fibre broadband to 333 homes at Glasshouse Gardens in Stratford, east London, and with Taylor Wimpey to supply 112 homes at RAF Daws Hill in High Wycombe.
As well as offering broadband speeds up to 300Mbps, residents of the two developments will be offered Sky's Original Bundle free for 12 months as part of a moving-in package.
