SSE lets you fix your broadband price for three years if you're also an energy customer
Fed up with your broadband and landline bill going up? Wish there was a why to stop it from happening? Well SSE can help.
If you take out a new broadband and phone contract out with SSE, you are guaranteed that price for a whole year. And if SSE is also your energy supplier, this guarantee is for three years.
Naturally, you might be concerned that this will tie you into a 12-month or even 36-month minimum deal. This is not the case as SSE doesn’t impose a fixed term contract.
This means you don’t sacrifice flexibility for certainty. Other providers, such as Sky, Virgin Media and BT, require new customers to sign up for 12 or 18 months in order to receive the best offers.
SSE’s standard broadband plan is £21 a month and this includes line rental and speeds of up to 17Mbps. If you want fibre, it’s £24 a month and this includes speeds of up to 38Mbps and line rental. The fastest package available costs £30 a month and provides speeds of up to 76Mbps.
On top of that you can pay £7 for unlimited local and national calls at any time, or £12 for unlimited landline calls within the UK and to 35 countries.
No download limits
There are no download limits and customers are provided with a free router. If you leave within the first year of signing up, you will have to return it, however.
Fibre services are delivered over BT’s Openreach fibre network, which is now accessible to more than 95% of the UK population. Fibre allows for significantly faster speeds than the copper cables used to power standard broadband services.
If you’re not an SSE energy customer there is an initial £30 connection charge that will be applied to your bill. Non-SSE customers will also have to pay a £9 a month surcharge after the 12-month fixed price guarantee has expired.
But there is an easy way to avoid this – sign up as an SSE gas or electricity customer within 14 days of signing up for SSE broadband. Of course this might be too much hassle, so do remember to make a note to review your deal before the 12 months is over.
SSE was formed in 1998 and provides gas, electricity and telecoms services across the UK. The Perth-based firm is considered one of the ‘big six’ energy firms in the UK. It also offers business communications services through its SSE Enterprise Telecoms arm.
SSE is keen to stress that all of its call centre operations are in the UK, located in Havant, Perth, Cumbernauld and Cardiff, and will give £20 to customers if the company fails to live up to its expected standards.
