TalkTalk to launch new TV app in early 2018

Wednesday, November 29th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

TalkTalk is to launch a new TV app in the New Year as it ramps up its multi-screen offering – and the provider says a mutli-room service for fibre broadband customers will follow later in 2018.

The launch of the app follows an overhaul of TalkTalk’s YouView box in 2016 and will see features such as the TalkTalk TV Store fully integrated into both the set top box and the mobile app.

TalkTalk says you’ll be able to stream, rent and buy films and boxsets through the app or simply watch the same mix of free-to-air and subscriptions channels you enjoy through your set top box.

A new feature that will make a big difference if you often watch TV on multiple devices is the ability to pause on one device and continue watching on another. The TalkTalk TV app will also have Chromecast capability, allowing you to watch on bigger screens around the house.

It sounds like something that probably should already be the case, but TalkTalk says the new app will have the same range of films and boxsets available as the set top box. It will also have the same menu options and generally the same look and feel as the set top box experience.

TalkTalk is expected to launch a multi-room offering for fibre broadband customers later in 2018, so you can watch TalkTalk TV in two rooms at the same time. This will take the form of an additional TV box, much like Sky Multiscreen.

Will Ennett, acting managing director at TalkTalk TV, said: “We’re focussed on offering a truly premium TV service at an unbeatable price.

“With the internet and mobile changing the way our customers watch TV, we’ve tailored our service to suit their evolving needs. We’ve streamlined TalkTalk TV to create a more integrated and seamless experience across devices, making it even easier for customers to watch the entertainment they love whether at home or on the go.”

Cheaper than BT, Sky and Virgin

Most of the features we’ve mentioned are also provided by TalkTalk’s rivals Sky, Virgin Media and BT, who all have their own TV apps allowing customers to watch ‘on the go’. But TalkTalk isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, it’s aim is to roughly match these guys in terms of a viewing experience while undercutting them on price.

For the most part it succeeds. It helps that it still has a Black Friday deal going on, but TalkTalk currently offers a lower monthly cost for a broadband, TV and phone package than any of the three mentioned above.

Until 30 November, £18.95 a month (plus £25 upfront) will get you broadband speeds up to 17Mbps, 103 channels including 14 in HD, a YouView box that will let you pause and rewind live TV and a pay as you use landline connection.

Right now you can even add 30 extra entertainment channels for an extra £6 a month and it still comes in cheaper than BT’s unlimited broadband, calls plus starter and sport package at £27.49, although with the BT deal you do get BT Sport and weekend calls thrown in with up to 17Mbps broadband and a YouView+ box.

The BT deal also comes with a £50 reward card, which almost negates the rather pricey £59.99 upfront cost.
