TalkTalk to offer fibre broadband to customers in York this autumn

Friday, May 15th 2015 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

TalkTalk is “on track” to connect customers in York to fibre broadband by the autumn.

The company is working with Sky and infrastructure provider CityFibre to provide the city with fibre to the premises (FTTP) broadband capable of speeds up to 1,000Mbps.

In its financials, which revealed it had gained more than a million broadband, TV and mobile customers in the past year, TalkTalk said the project underpinned its “ambitions in fibre”.

“We have made good progress on the groundworks for our York fibre to the premise trial,” it said.

“With 1,200 homes passed in the first dig area, [we] are on track to launch our proposition soon and begin connecting customers in the autumn.

“Early indications of build costs are proving to be in line with our target of under £500 per home passed.”

TalkTalk said the speed of take-up in the area would determine whether the time is right for a UK-wide rollout of the technology.

“Based on our experience to date, we remain confident about the potential to roll out FTTP in scale,” it said.

The company added that with predictions of an up to 40% take-up of its service, a 10m-strong UK household fibre network was a realistic possibility.

'Value for consumers'

It added: “We see ultrafast as an opportunity to build a mass market, value for money proposition that delivers value for consumers and shareholders through keen pricing and rapid scaling.”

Cable.co.uk reported in March that CityFibre had completed the first phase of the joint venture in York, enabling all three companies to fine tune elements of the network’s design and engineering processes.

The second phase will see the scale of deployment increase, bringing connectivity to thousands more premises.

“We are really pleased with what we have accomplished so far,” said CityFibre’s CEO Greg Mesch.

“As a team, Sky, TalkTalk and CityFibre have validated a network design for true ultrafast fibre to the premises for residents and business users.

“This next phase will accelerate the deployment and will further help to determine the scalability of the infrastructure.”

He said that without the bottlenecks that exist in traditional networks, CityFibre’s fibre infrastructure would future-proof the city.
