The new films coming to Amazon Prime Video in February 2018

Friday, January 26th 2018 by Marc Shoffman

We are in the midst of Hollywood awards season with the Golden Globes over and Oscar nominations revealed this week.

But you don’t have to go to a glitzy awards ceremony to hang out with the stars. Amazon Prime is releasing a range of classic movies showcasing many award winners and nominees from the past.

Here is our pick of the must-see films being released on Amazon Prime UK in February.

Dial M for Murder

Released in 1954, this American crime mystery, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, was filmed in 3D and is considered one of the best films ever made using the technology. It is based on the successful West End and Broadway show that tells the story of ex tennis pro Tony Wendice, played by Ray Milland, as he fails in his attempt to have his wealthy wife Margot, portrayed by Grace Kelly, murdered so he can keep her money.

Risky Business

The film that launched Tom Cruise into the Hollywood star we know today. Released in 1983, he plays Chicago high school student Joel Goodsen who has every teenager’s dream when his parents go on vacation leaving him with a free house. A standard straight-laced student, he is convinced to have some fun, later resulting in him crashing his dad’s Porsche and turning his home into a brothel to help pay for repairs.

The Bodyguard

This 1992 film is about more than just the Whitney Houston love ballad that you dance around to drunk at the end of a wedding. Ok, it is mainly known for the best-selling and Oscar-nominated soundtrack, but also stars Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, a former secret service agent who is hired as her bodyguard to protect her from a mystery stalker.

Another Tom Cruise classic but also worth watching for performances from William H Macy, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julianne Moore. Released in 1999, Magnolia follows the lives of nine characters whose respective searches for love, forgiveness and meaning become intertwined. The film got Cruise a Golden Globe for best actor and an Oscar nomination in the same category, while Seymour Hoffman and Moore won the supporting actor and actress awards at the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures for their roles.

The Mask, available from 7 February

Somebody stop me! The film that got Jim Carrey a Golden Globe nomination and established Cameron Diaz as a leading lady, The Mask follows shy bank worker Stanley Ipkiss who discovers a magical green mask that transforms him into a charming and confident playboy. This 1994 caper was itself nominated for an Oscar but lost out to Forrest Gump.

Sherlock Holmes

Director Guy Ritchie’s first take on the British detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Robert Downey Jr. plays the infamous Sherlock Holmes alongside Jude Law as his trusty sidekick Dr John Watson. The pair attempt to solve a series of brutal murders in London but must also prepare to tackle the dark and mysterious consequences. Downey Jr. received a best actor award at the Golden Globes for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.
