The OnePlus 5T is now available exclusively from O2
Amid the hype over the iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S8, there’s another manufacturer creeping up in the phone race with some tech to give the other phone giants a run for their money.
The OnePlus 5T is now available to buy in the UK – but only from O2 – and brings some impressive tech to the market at a value price. And for the next week or so you'll even get a 12-month Xbox subscription thrown in – more about that later.
The new release is an upgrade of the OnePlus 5 phone, which first came on the scene in June this year. Its impressive software and features make it a real contender with other flagship phones and it falls within the mid-range price bracket. There are two storage models available – 64GB and 128GB – and both come in just one colour, Midnight Black.
One of the features many mobile enthusiasts have been excited about is facial recognition. Following the iPhone X’s debut of the technology, many wondered if another handset would follow suit without the £999 price tag.
In short, yes the OnePlus 5T does have facial recognition software but it’s not quite a match for Apple’s offspring as you can’t authorise payments by simply looking at your phone as you can with the iPhone X. You can still use your face to unlock your phone so there is that added level of security.
The dual camera with 16MP and 20MP lenses on the rear of the device allows you to take stunning photos even when there isn’t much light around. Social media fans will be happy to hear there is a 16MP on the front of the phone so you can take selfies galore.
OnePlus has taken the phrase go big or go home literally. Its latest handset has a whopping 6-inch full optic AMOLED screen with a 18:9 resolution display. This is slightly bigger than the iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S8. This may be good news if you often watch TV or play games from your phone.
These days mobile manufacturers have upped the ante when it comes to battery charging, with many handsets boasting wireless charging capabilities. The OnePlus 5T has Dash Charge which gives you a full day’s power in just half an hour of charging.
A flaw of the device is the lack of expandable storage. If you choose the 128GB handset this may not be a problem but if you’re someone who likes to store a lot of apps, music and videos of your phone, be prepared for the annoying ‘Insufficient Storage’ notification once you’ve reached your limit with the 64GB handset.OnePlus hopes to rival the iPhone X with facial recognition technology
In the Apple versus Google fight, this phone is on Google’s side as it runs on Android’s operating system. With up to 8GB of RAM the handset will allow you to switch apps with ease.
If you’re looking for a high-end phone for a reasonable price the OnePlus 5T definitely deserves your consideration. It has a RRP of £449 or £38 a month if you prefer to spread the cost over a 24-month contract.
Exclusive to O2
The new handset went on sale last Tuesday (21 November) and the only way to get your hands on it is either from O2 or directly from the OnePlus website.
Magnus McDonald, the director of product and category management at O2, said: “As the only high street retailer in the UK where you can order the OnePlus 5T, we’re proud to be continuing our relationship with OnePlus and bringing our customers the OnePlus 5T.
“Demand for OnePlus devices has exceeded all our expectations and we’re excited to be able to offer such a great product at a really compelling price”.
If you’re a gamer you might like the sound of this deal. O2 is giving away a free 12-month Microsoft Xbox Live Gold subscription worth £39.99 when you buy a OnePlus 5T before Wednesday 6 December.
To claim your free two-month subscription you’ll need to visit the promotions webpage and upload your receipt.
The Xbox Live Gold Membership is perfect if you’re a keen gamer. You can join a multiplayer community, receive free games twice a month and get discounts up to 75% on the Xbox Store.
There is also a Cinema Pass up for grabs with O2. If you pay outright or sign up for a contract with this phone, as well as a range of other handsets including the latest iPhones and Samsungs, you can get discount with up to 40% off cinema tickets. With pay-monthly contracts your cinema pass will be valid for 24 months and it’s six months if you opt for a pay as you go phone through O2.
Right now O2 is offering 50GB of monthly data with the One Plus 5T for £49 a month. You’ll have to pay £9.99 upfront and in return you’ll get unlimited minutes and texts as well as the free Xbox Live Gold Membership and cinema pass.
This is quite a lot of data. If it’s just too much for you, O2 offers a 20GB tariff for £45 a month and a 12GB tariff for £41 a month. There’s an upfront cost of £9.99 with both plans and they both include the extra O2 perks.
For just 4GB with unlimited texts and calls you’re looking at a cost of £38 a month and a one-off upfront fee of £9.99.
All of the O2 Refresh plans span a 24-month contract and your bill will be split up into a device plan and an airtime plan. Just as it sounds the device plan is essentially your credit agreement for the handset where you’ll spread the cost over 24 months. The airtime plan is where you pay for your data, texts and call allowance, which may change annually.
