The best Sony Xperia XZ1 and Google Pixel 2 deals with Android Oreo pre-installed
Android Oreo, the latest version of the world’s most popular mobile operating system, was officially launched in August 2017 and if you have the right phone you can expect an upgrade sometime over the next year or so.
Google says Android Oreo (or version 8.0) boots up twice as fast as previous versions, while features include ‘picture-in-picture’, which lets you see two apps at once, and notification dots that quickly show you what’s new and can be swiped away.
You can also jump straight into new apps directly from your browser without having to wait for them to install and – most importantly of all in 2017 – browse through a fully redesigned emoji set including 60 new designs.
If you’re itching to get your hands on the new operating system but don’t have the right handset – or just can’t wait until next summer for the upgrade – there are two phones that already have Android Oreo pre-installed. We’ve rounded up some of the best deals available right now.
Sony Xperia XZ1 from £23 a month on Virgin MobileThe Sony XZ1 was the first phone to come with Android Oreo pre-installed
Sony’s flagship Xperia XZ1 has an impressive 19MP camera, 5.2” HD screen, packs 64GB of internal memory, has a fingerprint sensor and is protected by tough Gorilla Glass.
Oh yeah, and it was the first phone available to buy with Android Oreo pre-installed.
You can get an XZ1 from O2 for £9.99 upfront then £41 a month. This only gives you a pretty stingy 1GB of data, but you do get unlimited calls and texts as well as some of the other perks of being an O2 customer – free wi-fi when you’re out and about, offers and discounts from O2 Priority and if you order before 3 January a two-year pass that will get you discounted cinema tickets.
You should also consider EE, which will give you twice as much data as O2 for a couple of quid extra a month (£42.99 to be precise) and no upfront fee. Its plan also offers unlimited calls and texts, plus you get three months’ access to the BT Sport app.
The cheapest way to get hold of a Sony Xperia XZ1 is to go with Virgin Mobile. To be fair, the fact that Virgin will let you spread the cost of a handset over three years instead of two, bringing down the monthly price, means it is often the cheapest way to get a premium smartphone.
Virgin’s plans start at £23 a month with no upfront fee for 1.2GB of data, 300 minutes and unlimited texts. Paying more money gets you more data, obviously, and at the moment Virgin will give you 5GB instead of 1GB for £26 a month, or 8GB instead of 2GB for £29 a month.
Google Pixel 2 from EE or via Carphone Warehouse
A 64GB memory, a highly-rated 12MP camera, a 5" screen, a fast charging and long lasting battery – the specs of the Google Pixel 2 show there really are a good selection of phones available if you decide to look further than Apple or Samsung.
It makes sense that a phone made by Google (the handset is actually manufactured by HTC but let’s not get too picky) should be among the first to be made available with Android Oreo pre-installed.
The only UK network offering the Pixel 2 and its big brother the Pixel 2 XL directly is EE as it’s Google’s preferred network partner. To get the phone on another network you’ll have to go via Carphone Warehouse but even then you’ll be limited to iD Mobile, Vodafone, O2 or Virgin. The latest version of Google's operating system is available, unsurprisingly, on Google's own smartphones
EE has four plans available for the Google Pixel 2 and says the best-selling of these is its top 4GEE Max plan, which gives you 15GB of data for £47.99 a month. You also get unlimited texts and calls as well as access to the BT Sport app for the full length of the 24-month contract. You can also get the Pixel 2 on a 40GB plan with a free Google Home smart speaker for £52.99.
If you go through Carphone Warehouse, you’ll be able to get the Google Pixel 2 on O2 for £44 a month and £9.99 upfront. As part of Carphone Warehouse’s Black Tag event this deal currently comes with a monthly data allowance of 20GB as opposed to the usual 5GB, plus unlimited texts and calls.
Carphone Warehouse also lets you choose to have the phone in blue or white if you fancy changing it up from Jet Black.
Google Pixel 2 XL
The Google Pixel 2 XL is much like the smaller version of the handset but with a 6" screen. EE's best-selling plan is its 8GB 4GEE Max tariff, which also gives you unlimited calls and texts and 24 months of BT Sport.
All EE pay monthly deals also come with WiFi Calling, which as the name suggests lets you make phone calls and send texts over wi-fi, and six free months of Apple Music.
